Today we want to talk about something super important: skin. It’s our biggest organ, afterall. We don’t often spend a lot of time talking about skin and beauty care because we are by no means experts, but when it comes to products that we can’t get enough of, we have to share. Today, we’re sharing part one of two, discussing one of our absolute favourite products for your skin. We’re sharing the love for two products over the course of the next few days because they have a very important ingredient in common: charcoal.
By now, we’re sure you’ve heard all about the health benefits of activated charcoal. If you haven’t, though, we’ll give you a quick rundown. Basically, activated charcoal is available as a black powder, in pills, or in liquids and it is super detoxifying. If ingested, it’s great for reducing bloating and gas. Topically, it does wonders for hair and skin. It’s even been known to whiten teeth!
Activated charcoal can also be used to make your own beauty products including face masks, shampoos, body scrubs and more. Activated charcoal can be drying so it’s not meant to be used every day, but rather as a deep cleaning option.
Rather than making our own charcoal products, we chose to buy a few and are absolutely in love.
The first product we want to talk about is the Himalayan Charcoal Face Mask from the Body Shop. We love that the product has ingredients that are sourced ethically and sustainably. Plus, they’re not tested on animals. (Disclaimer: We know the Body Shop is owned by L’Oreal, which does test on animals. If you’re looking for cruelty free products specifically, this is a judgment call. We hope that by supporting CF brands, the parent companies will see the value in providing cruelty free products and perhaps make that shift themselves.)
One of the things that caught our attention with the scrub was the packaging. We are suckers for pretty packaging and this mask has simple and effective packaging that caught our eyes instantly.
The mask itself has ingredients like green tea and Himalayan charcoal, and is a dark grey colour, though it dries lighter. It smells phenomenal, too, by the way. So fresh! The consistency is also great, it isn’t too thick so the mask spreads on easily and despite the small size of the jar, a little goes a long way.
The mask’s packaging claims that the mask should be used 2-3 times per week to see smoother, clearer and more radiant skin. After using roughly twice a week, we can attest to that fact. Our skin is visibly clearer and it’s smoother to the touch. Results are noticeable as soon as we washed away the mask, but consistent use certainly helps. We were so happy with the results of this mask and how clean our skin looked and felt after use.
Tip: When you are removing the mask, rather than simply wiping away, wet hand slightly and rub in small circles. This will act sort of like a scrub to help further exfoliate your skin. Sure, it’ll take a little longer to wash away, but you’ll love the results. The store employee tipped us off to that idea and we love it!
If you’re looking for something budget friendly, this by far isn’t the most expensive option out there but it did cost us about $30 for the jar. That said, we definitely feel we’ve gotten our money’s worth and strongly suggest checking this out if you’re in the market for a new mask! Just sit back and relax will it does it’s thing, you won’t regret it! We like to get in a little bit of reading when we can, so being confined to the house with a face mask is just the right opportunity. A cozy spot and a good book, what could be more relaxing?
The other product we want to talk about is Dark Angels by Lush. Totally vegan and cruelty free, this product is a huge winner for us. We love Lush and this product truly doesn’t disappoint. It comes in their customary black pots, which, once you’ve amassed enough, can be returned for a free face mask. We love the great recycling initiative, and we’re pretty partial to that Cupcake face mask!
To use, simply break off a small amount of the solid face wash and rub between your palms with a little water to form a paste. Then, apply, using your finger tips to rub small circles. This is great for exfoliating and getting that deep clean. You’ll want to rinse extremely thoroughly though as we did find that the cleanser does tend to leave residue if you aren’t thorough. And let’s be honest, no one wants to walk away with more clogged pores than they started out with. We found we had to pay particular attention around our nostrils. Once you’ve thoroughly washed it away, follow with a toner to close up the pores and a moisturizer!
Despite activated charcoal being drying on it’s own, we’ve found this face wash to be gentle enough for daily use, though we wouldn’t recommend that for dry skin. We love how smooth and clean our skin feels afterward and have noticed improvements in the overall tone of our skin as well as a reduction in blemishes!
What are some of your favourite charcoal products? We’d love to give them a try!
